Chives Common Allium Schoenoprasum is the standard variety to grow in the garden, and the plant produces small lavender flowers and hollow stems that are edible, smelling and tasting mildly of onion. Use in soups, scrambled eggs, soft cheeses, mashed potatoes and salads. Can be used fresh, dried or frozen. Grow in small clumps and divide every couple of years. The leaves are very cold hardy. Hardy and easy to transplant. Seedlings can be transplanted four weeks after germination.
